Discover Discovery

2:10AM on the Monday of final's week a.k.a. tuesday morning of Finals week. Instead of studying, or better yet sleeping, here's a track I've grown to like from a New York base duo that might be familiar to you all.

Rostam Batmanglij, (keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals for group Vampire Weekend), and Wes Miles (vocalist for Ra Ra Riot) has started a side band called Discovery.

I'm pretty late in the game since they have been producing tracks and working together since 2005, but only recently have I heard their track Osaka Loop Line and loved the intro and beat of the track...the vocals needed to some getting use to, but being a fan of both of their bands, learned to accept it.

This guy's new-ish EP, People Numbers Money Business, has been out for quite some time, but iTunes shuffle has proved again that it knows how to get the party started when this bad boy anthem started blaring out my headphones:

Mister Fabian Pianta first blipped my musical radar when BNR released a remix of Lava Lava — a bangtastic refresh of one of my favorite Boys Noize hype anthems. I really don't know how else to categorize his sound. Not straight bangers, not super-experimental either.

To really showcase how diverse this man can be, here is another favorite — this time, done for German Dub Dons Modeselektor:

When you thought A-Trak couldn't be any cooler. I recently watched his Canada DMC 1997 Championship video and was discouraged along with every other deejay who isn't 15 and that freakin' talented.

Anyone remember this track?



I never knew who the artist was until I found myself scrolling through their past songs, and came up on this gem. After some minor google expertise, the track The Things You Say is by a london based group, Cicada, and was released in 2006.

Might just be me, but 2006 seemed like a longs ways aways from todays....

anyway, hope you enjoyed the blast from the past, and Cicada has a new album out called Metroplis. check 'em OUT!

What's up everyone? Being a total geek, I find myself finding some of the geekiest things on the web and loving them. Make fun of my pocket protector, taped up glasses all you want but I'll still rep the geeks 24/7.

In my effort to promote everything that is geek I give you what I consider to be an amazing clip. This scratch deejay is a prime example that geeks never lose their roots. I've been on this guy's en - you - teez for awhile now, and it's about time I rambled about his jam-tastic music.

and we're not talking about the game, or practice, we're talking about Breakbot.

Being a part of Ed Banger records, I've always overlooked this guy with his fellow Bangin' record mates Busy P, Dj Mehdi, & Justice. But with his Dance On Glass Mix 03, he got me on board and some.

For the most part, he ain't no club bangin' I wanna punch somebody in the face kinda guy. But if you want some chill music to walk to, have it in the background, or want that sensual dancing sound, this is your jam. Love the guy here's a youtube vid of his song "Baby I'm Yours."

Let the Bass Kick

When one tries to define electronic music, it is easy to go with generalities (it's music composed with artificial instruments), landscape descriptions (unce unce unce), or artist associations (you know, like that Tiesto guy).

The Deconstructionist in me wants to analyze the elements of electronic music. Hi-hat. Hand clap. Snare drum. Bassline. Synth pad? Filters? Build-ups and Break-downs? What is required of electronic music so that someone listening to it says, "Yea. This is Electronic Music?"

The styles span many different moods and, consequently, different aural landscapes composed of various instruments. You have jungle: the fetishization of the Amen Break; or filtered house: a rehash of 70s and 80s disco and hi-nrg; or downtempo: music that if you were high enough you'd actually stay awake to it. In the grand Venn-Diagram of music, what common elements are even present? What can we even say is ubiquitous in all of electronic music?

I thought it'd be the kick drum. Like civilization is the fence to structure society, the kick drum is the skeleton of rhythm; it is the silhouette that allows you to differentiate whether you're looking at the shadow of a cat or a rapist. Even the two genres of breakbeat and electro-house are differentiated merely by the structure of the kicks.

The kick drum is the soul of electronic music.

However, through my mental self-diarrhea, I stumbled upon this little bugger:

No kick. No bass. Nothing. No rhythm? Hardly. No soul? I still like it. My whole world has been turned inside-out.

I wonder how it would sound in a club.. the Oizo remix reminds me of a scene from the movie Irréversible (which the one and only Thomas Bangalter composed the score [NSFW] [SPOILERS]).

Chilla in My Mindnilla

I'm not a dubstep expert by any means. *emphasis on NOT an expert*. I would say that I know of a couple artists and a couple of tracks. One of those artists is a duo from London consisting of Saul Milton and Will Kennard...better known as Chase & Status.

Chase & Status has been around since 2004, producing tracks under the label Mercury Records and falling under the genres of drum and bass, dubstep, grime and electronic.

My first encounter of the duo was for their "massive" dubstep track Eastern Jams, which was also my first taste of dubstep. The reason for this blog post was not only to introduce a possible new artist, but also a (re)introduction to the genre of dubstep. White Lies - "Death" (Chase & Status remix) is a good example where a song doesn't have that trademark wobble that sometimes overtakes a dubstep track. Take a listen, and check out their myspace while you're at it. Not a hater of the wobble, just enjoy artists' creativity.

I'm an 80kid(z)

Instead of reading what I have to say about the topic, Here is a summary of what I would have said.

"80kidz emerged from the borderless youth culture of Japan.
However, their music makes it seem that it may not even matter that they are actually from Japan. They’ve already performed with the likes of Justice, Busy P, Boys Noize, Teenage Bad Girl, Hot Chip, and Bobmo. And, Isn’t it more interesting to be witness to where their music is going to take you and where they are already going with their music?

They began their activities making music as a three-piece DJ unit in early 2007 when releasing their own limited bootleg mix CD “The KidzAre Alnight No. 1” in February of 2007. This mix sold-out rapidly and requests for DJ appearances quickly followed.
“The Kidz Are Alnight No.2” continued things further forward for them. By the time they announce their unofficial remixes on their Myspace website in the Summer various music blog websites such as Kidz By Colette begin to pick up on them and these remixes and their music begins to get blogged, discussed, and circulate around the world. This attention builds even further with their posting an original track “Disdrive” which followed in the form of official remix requests pouring in from the Shoes, Quiero Club, When Saints Go Machine, The Glammers, and Futurecop. Even their remix of Yelle that they did for fun featured seventh place in the “Ce Jeu” remix contest on her blog website.

Now, they are releasing their very first 12-inch single “Disdrive ep” in March of 2008. “Disdrive” has already been charted by various DJs as being one of their favorite songs of 2007 and the single will also feature the already popular track “Fxxk Fox” which Autokraz has even been playing out a lot."

In addition to this novel of a description, the group released the album This is My Shit in 2009, and I also heard that 80kidz lost one of their members. The group is still producing tracks and have a new EP out called Voice.

Van She on a Rampage

Remember the Van She remix of Utah Saint's "Something Good"? If you don't, here is a link:

Van She is an electro-pop powerhouse from Australia (I'm guessing? Most of their stuff is released by Modular). Anyway, Michael Di Francesco aka Arithmatix!, the lead synth/keyboardist of Van She, put out this sicktacular remix of Dragonette's "Pick Up the Phone", released four days ago on Beatport. Unfortunately, it seems to be territory-restricted (damn you Australia!) but for now, the HQ youtube link should suffice:

I used to listen to Trance too

I too listened to a lot of Trance like Jawsomo, when I was younger and first got into electronic music. Actually, the artist that really got me into EDM and wanting to learn how to DJ was none other than the German DJ/Producer ATB (Andre Tanneberger). That was back when he still did mostly Trance, but then he drifted to other types of electronic music, not necessarily your typical EDM stuff. I too have mostly moved on (to House), but don't mind putting on a few Trance tracks from time to time.

and now i don't.

it's kind of bittersweet when you realize how much life has changed.

That Brazilian Hype

Brazil is coming in hot. Producing artists such as Cansei de Ser Sexy and The Twelves into the music scene, there is now another to add to the list.

Gui Boratto might have been active since 2004, but it was his album Take My Breath Away (2009) under the label Kompakt which caught my attention. Focusing on a mix of House, Progressive, Techno, and Minimal genres, Gui's style is exactly what holds my interests and is exactly what i was waiting to hear.
